About Max

Max Knauer hosts Chatauqua50309. He's been a life-long advocate for people least able to speak for themselves. During a 35-year teaching career Max worked to help students develop life-long learning, creative and living skills. His volunteer work, spanning nearly a half-century, has included advocacy on behalf of children and adults with special needs. With his wife, Kittie, Max helped to raise two sons to adulthood who serve now in turn, giving back to the Des Moines, Iowa community with their own work and families.

Max’s passions as a retiree include encouraging civil discourse over the most difficult public issues while also volunteering with assistive agencies in the community. Max hosts Chatauqua50309 on Wednesday nights from 9 to 10 PM, Central Time (USA), with two subject lines, each divided into three 18-minute segments:

1. 1st hour, 8 pm to 9 pm: Telling their own stories, guests discuss volunteer opportunities in the community with local agencies, public committees & commissions and other associations. Listeners are encouraged to consider volunteer opportunities and commitments in their communities. About twice, monthly, a locally-owned business or organization is featured which offers a social gathering place in the community, also enhancing the cultural life of its patrons; locally-owned coffee houses have been featured, recently.
2. 2nd hour, 9 pm - 10 pm: Guest-guided civil discussion of a current public issue, sometimes through book discussion and adding other recent public commentary. Listeners are encouraged to get involved in their own local discussion and action groups.
